About the event

This Equity Thursday event focused on the top tier of the investor market: private equity. We introduced the main characteristics of private equity and then discussed with experienced CEE investors what types of transactions they looked for and how they assessed potential targets. The conversation covered differences between PE, venture capital and strategic investors, regional opportunities and challenges, and key considerations around exits. Speakers from PortfoLion and Arx Equity Partners shared their insights and real life examples.

Covered topics

We started with a short foundation about the main characteristics and specific features of private equity, then with our experienced private equity investor guests active in the CEE region we talked about the following:

  • What kinds of transactions is the PE investor looking for, and for companies of what size, phase and growth purpose can private equity be a relevant alternative?
  • Private equity vs venture capital similarities and differences.
  • What makes a company an attractive investment target for them? How do they decide on an investment, what do they examine, what does the process look like?
  • Are there preferred and NOGO industries, which ones are these and why?
  • Private equity vs strategic investor what is the difference, and when is it worth considering each type of investor?
  • In what can a PE investor give more than a strategic investor, and in what can they not (and do not want to) compete with a strategic investor?
  • For whom is PE not suitable?
  • CEE region and Hungary what is our perception among PE investors, are we attractive targets, what untapped reserves do we have, and what challenges do regional companies face?
  • When is it timely to think about the direction of the exit? Do you need to prepare differently for a transaction towards a PE than for other types of deals for example towards a strategic investor or a management buyout? Should this already be kept in mind in an early phase? To what extent can PE funds be exit targets for Hungarian or regional startups at all?
  • Stories, good and bad examples.
